Why You Need LinkedIn For Job Hunting

by Katie Devereaux

If you are thinking about applying for a new job, it’s important to make sure you’re keeping up with the times by creating an online presence. A good way to get yourself on the internet is by creating a profile on LinkedIn.com. This online social networking site is designed specifically to connect  those looking for jobs with those looking to hire.

Though some people view LinkedIn as resume substitute, I look at it as a resume supplement. LinkedIn not only allows you to get your experience and information out there for recruiters and hiring managers to view, it also provides tools you can use to be proactive in the job searching process.

These days, potential employers are going to look up job applicants online with a quick Google search (which is another Blog Post all together). When searching for applicants professional profile, LinkedIn allows for more detail about your experience. According to this Spear article, LinkedIn is  becoming a popular tool used by dental practices to not only attract potential employees, but to also do a little digging on their applicants.linked-in-dentist

“LinkedIn is one of the best tools to use when filling spots in your dental practice team. Since LinkedIn acts as a digital home to professional resumes, you can see the capabilities along with experience of possible future employees instantly. You can even actively search for employees by fine-tuning your search with specific filters to pinpoint you to the best candidates for that position,”

Denise Pritchard / Spear

When filling out your profile, it’s important to be detailed and use relevant keywords so your LinkedIn profile comes up when practices are searching for candidates to hire. It’s also important to list your relevant skills.

As a LinkedIn user, you can utilize the Jobs tab to find available positions you might be qualified for based on your desired location. Members can also perform a more advanced search that requests your desired job field, location and salary. LinkedIn allows users to apply online through the website.

Like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, those using LinkedIn can follow businesses and dental practices to receive updates about job postings and changes within the companies. Dental Temps Professional Services has a LinkedIn Profile, and we are constantly using it to update our followers on where the available jobs are and how to apply for them. We also use LinkedIn to post relevant articles about the dentistry field.

A feature of this website similar to other social media outlets such as Facebook and Myspace is networking. Instead of having what is usually referred to as “friends,” LinkedIn allows its members to make “connections” The more connections you have, the more you’ll be able to see. If I am connected to you, I will be able to see posts made by those you are connected to, which especially important if they are posting jobs! Your connections can also endorse you and write recommendations that potential employers can see when looking at your profile.

Even if you are not actively looking for a job, it’s important to keep your LinkedIn up to date. And if you are looking for job, make sure you are participating on the website — you never know what you might find or who might find you!
