Why Are You Shouting At Potential Employees?

Why Are You Shouting At Potential Employees?

by Kim Knapp

While exploring the internet dental job boards, the Craigslist ad below stood out for all the wrong reasons.

Dental Assistant Trainee No Experience
Craigslist
DO NOT SEND ATTACHMENTS THEY WILL BE DELETED WITHOUT OPENING
Dental Assistant Trainee

These are the first four lines—copied word for word—the job seeker reads. What a poor first impression.

Do you think this ad is attractive to an entry level dental assistant, or any job seeker for that matter?

Typing in all caps is perceived as shouting and will likely come across as aggressive. Who would want to work in a dental office with staff perceived to be angry? Please don’t use caps in your ads. This ad is not welcoming or attractive.

To their point, I do agree that a letter of introduction along with a resume is all you need to pre-screen candidates. These two documents need to be stellar for you to add to your narrowed-down selection. You will be requesting further information and documents to support the resume during the interview process.

There is a better way to let job seekers know you are not interested in additional supporting information at this time. Craft your ad using warm and welcoming words with the hint of your desire for no attachments.

Example:

Are you interested in working in the dental industry? Look no further. We are hiring an entry level Dental Assistant, no experience required. We will provide your training on the job, as we work together as a team to offer stellar care to our customers. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. We look forward to reviewing your resume and letter of introduction. Your career begins today. Applying is easy. Simply forward your cover letter and resume only for consideration to info@xyz-dental.com.

This ad is exciting and inviting, warm and welcoming. It tells potential job candidates that there is help available for them, and it speaks to the office working as a team while taking excellent care of its patients. The wording advertises a fabulous opportunity and one job seekers would desire. Who would not want to work at this office? The prescreening process for this ad is simple. Those applicants who follow instructions will be considered, and those who send additional attachments will not.

Dental offices who are posting ads looking for new employees, take heed: If your goal is to attract top job seekers, please don’t shout.
