I have to hand it to social media. Earlier this week LinkedIn reminded me–along with my followers–that October is my work anniversary month. This past month I celebrated 13 years of service and dedication to the dental industry. WOW, how time flies! It really doesn’t seem like I’ve been in business for 13 years. Yes, Mom, you’re right: time goes by faster when we get older!
Today I spent some time at my favorite park, sitting on a bench, reflecting on my journey to date. I’ve learned so much about myself over these past 13 years as an entrepreneur. It’s been quite a bumpy road with many a twist, hairpin turns and a few big potholes. When the highs were high, I zipped along, and those who love me kept me grounded. When the lows were low, I grit my teeth, sputtered like a gas tank running on empty, pulled myself back up, and had those who love me holding me close. Keep reading below to find out the 13 things I know for sure:

1. When I make a mistake, I own it, I forgive myself, I learn from it, I fix it and move on.
2. Helping others: it’s what drives me day in and day out.
3. I’m always prepared for “no.” When I hear “yes,” it’s that much sweeter!
4. Follow-up, Follow-up, Follow-up . . . and did I mention, FOLLOW-UP?!
5. I begin the day with me-time. I put myself first, for my health and wellbeing. It’s all about work, life, balance. I’m no good to anyone if I’m unhappy, worn out, sick and tired.
6. If I put things back where I found them–where they belong–when I’m done with them, I’m not spending time looking for them!
7. I learned to surround myself with people who know what I don’t know.
8. I raise my hand and ask for help when I need it.
9. I’ve learned it’s OK to give myself permission to say “NO.”
10. I’m of value. My time is of value, and those I come in contact with have value. HONOR AND RESPECT AND KINDNESS work both ways. You reap what you sow.
11. I’ve pruned the tree with no regrets. I’ve learned the hard way that you have to get rid of the dead wood. Doing so makes way for new growth.
12. Words are a gift, use them wisely.
13. It’s okay to have a fear of the unknown. FEAR is a good thing. I acted on my dream, stepped out, took a chance and ignored the people who told me I could not do it. If I never took action, I would not be where I am today. I’m driving forward into year 14 because I still BELIEVE.
