To Take Charge of Your Career, Start by Building Your Tribe

No matter where you are at in your career, you need to network. It’s hard to look at networking as burdensome but that is because you are networking the wrong way. Instead of networking with a lot of different people, you need to develop a community or “tribe” of people that are supportive and you are comfortable working with. A proper tribe will be encouraging as well as supportive, these are the people you need to network with to succeed.

Reflect on these key points:

  • 1networking is necessary to survival in open-ended employment and creative careers where a form of tribalism can help weather uncertain times and provide needed support
  • 2creatives often prefer their lack of stability because it adds to the integrity of the work and feeling of freedom
  • 3Organizations cannot successfully create tribes, they must be organic and they cannot exist in too large a measure either

“In contrast to their expansive networks, the people we studied often described having a tight community, often a handful of people, who took the edge off their working lives.”
