Mark Murphy’s study of 27,000 managers and employees suggests that one of the most powerful tricks in management is to respond to problems by asking employees “what’s your plan to fix this?” instead of losing one’s temper. The study revealed that only about 23 percent of workers believe that their managers consistently provide constructive feedback when workers consult them about problems, but that workers in that 23 percent have consistently higher satisfaction with their companies. This suggests that finding a good way to respond to problems workers report is hugely important.
